Condolences function at Namrup College

Namrup College organized a heartfelt condolence function today on 20th September 2025 at the morning assembly ground, led by the Botany Department, to pay tribute to the legendary musician Zubeen Garg, who tragically lost his life in an accident on 19th September 2025 at Signature, while on route to perform at the Northeast Festival.​

Background and Purpose

The condolence meeting was convened in response to the untimely demise of Zubeen Garg, a music icon whose influence spanned several decades and touched the hearts of countless admirers. Zubeen Garg, 52, was celebrated for his enormous body of work, which included over 38,000 songs across 40 languages, as well as his role as a cultural ambassador for Assam and the Northeast region. His passing on September 19 sent shockwaves throughout Assam and the broader cultural community, with fans mourning his loss and public institutions organizing tributes and remembrance functions. The condolence function was hosted by Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Assistant Professor and Head of the Botany Department.​

The Botany Department took the initiative to organize the event, reflecting the college's commitment to celebrating and upholding the cultural values Zubeen Garg represented. Faculty members, students, staff, and members of the local community assembled at the morning assembly ground, observing silence and sharing words of remembrance. The program began with the offering of floral tributes before a photograph of Zubeen Garg, followed by speeches from the Principal Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi. A deep condolence letter was prepared and read out by Principal. Along with senior faculty highlighting his contributions to music, cultural unity, and philanthropy.​

During the ceremony, a brief biography of Zubeen Garg was presented, emphasizing his pioneering efforts in bringing Assamese music to national prominence and his tireless advocacy for social causes. The event also included a group rendition of some of his acclaimed songs, in soulful tribute to his legacy. ​

He also announced that the Open Stage of the assembly ground will be named as Zubeen Garg Open Stage to memorize him in the college campus.​

Farewell Programme for Mr. Diganta Buragohain

      

     A small get-together followed by a farewell luncheon was organized by the faculty members and students of the Department of Botany on the eve of the retirement of Mr. Diganta Buragohain, Laboratory Assistant (Lab Bearer). Mr. Buragohain rendered his valuable service to the Department for nearly 30 years with utmost dedication and sincerity.

      The meeting was presided over by Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, Principal, Namrup College. Dr. Utpal Tamuly, Vice Principal, Namrup College, also attended the programme.

     Mr. Buragohain joined Namrup College in 1996, initially working in a non-sanctioned post for almost 12 years. In 2008, he was appointed as a permanent employee of the College. Since then, he had been serving with complete commitment as a Laboratory Assistant in the Department of Botany until his retirement in August 2025.



       During his long years of service, he contributed significantly not only to the Botany Department but also to the overall development of the College. His simplicity, kind nature, and cooperative attitude made everyone feel comfortable working with him. He was especially admired by the students, who fondly called him “Khura” (uncle), for his friendly and approachable behaviour.

        To express sincere gratitude for his lifelong service and to convey best wishes for his retired life, the faculty members, laboratory assistants, and students organized a farewell gathering on 28th August 2025 at the Department of Botany. 

      The farewell programme was hosted by Mr. Ashok Urang, a B.Sc. 3rd Semester, Botany Major student.

On this occasion:

  • The Principal delivered a heartfelt speech appreciating Mr. Buragohain’s long-term dedicated service to the College.
  • The Vice Principal recalled his humble nature and selfless contribution.
  • Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Head of the Department of Botany, highlighted his devotion both to the Department and to various activities of the College.
  • Dr. Urmika Phangchopi and Ms. Kakoli Baruah, Assistant Professors of the Botany Department, also spoke, emphasizing his dedication and cordial nature.
  • Students shared their experiences and expressed their affection for Mr. Buragohain, unanimously praising his childlike simplicity, generosity, and friendly nature.

    The programme concluded with an outpouring of respect and gratitude for Mr. Buragohain’s remarkable service. The gathering came to a close successfully at around 12:30 PM.

Orientation program

On 1st August 2025, department of Botany organised an orientation program on the first day of academic session 2025-26. 

The main purpose of organising orientation program is to orient to students for their coming academic session.

Students and teaching and non-teaching staff were present in the program.

Morning assembly organised by Botany department

The Department of Botany successfully conducted the final day of its scheduled morning assembly on 1st August 2025, marking the commencement of the academic session 2025–26. The event was held as part of the college's tradition, where different departments take turns organizing the morning assembly.




The final day’s program was hosted by Mr. Ashok Urang, a B.Sc. 3rd semester student of Botany. The assembly began on a devotional note with a prayer led by students of the department. This was followed by the reading of the news headlines by Ms. Nayan Jyoti Gogoi, a B.Sc. 5th semester Botany major. A motivational speech was then delivered by Miss Pratiksha Baruah, a B.Sc. 3rd semester student.

It is noteworthy that the Department of Botany was allotted three consecutive days27th June, 28th June, and 1st August 2025—to conduct the morning assemblies, all of which were successfully executed with active participation from the students.

Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Head of the Department of Botany, extended his heartfelt gratitude to all participating students for their enthusiastic involvement and for ensuring the smooth and meaningful completion of the department’s morning assembly responsibilities.

Morning Assembly

The Botany Department of Namrup College successfully organized and conducted the morning assembly activities today, engaging students and faculty in a meaningful and enlightening session.

The programme commenced with a solemn prayer, which was joined by all present within the college campus, setting a harmonious tone for the day. The assembly was officially hoisted by Mr. Nayan Jyoti Gogoi, a dedicated fifth-semester student of the Botany Department, who welcomed everyone and introduced the sequence of events.

Adding depth to the morning gathering, Mr. Rupjyoti Gogoi, a student of HS 2nd Year Science, delivered the “Thought for the Day,” inspiring the audience with his reflective and motivational message.

The highlight of the assembly was a compelling speech by Mr. Ashok Urgang, a third-semester Botany major, who spoke on the significant topic, “Palm Oil Cultivation and Its Consequences on Biodiversity and Local Crops.” Mr. Urgang thoughtfully addressed the environmental and agricultural impacts of palm oil farming, raising awareness about ecological balance and sustainable practices.

Concluding the programme, the Principal of Namrup College, Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, delivered a concise and insightful summary speech, appreciating the efforts of the Botany students and emphasizing the importance of such educational activities in fostering environmental consciousness among young learners.

World Environment Day 2025

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the Department of Botany and Zoology, in collaboration with the Institutional Biotech Hub, NSS Unit, and IQAC of Namrup College, organized a comprehensive and impactful programme aimed at fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students and faculty. The event was meticulously planned, featuring insightful speeches, hands-on activities, and a collective commitment to the cause of nature conservation.

Opening Ceremony and Keynote Address

The programme commenced with an inspiring opening speech by Mr. Hijam Homendro Singh, Retired Associate Professor of Namrup College. Mr. Singh passionately emphasized the critical role of youth in the mission of nature conservation. He urged the younger generation to actively participate in safeguarding the environment, reminding everyone that the future will not mirror the comforts of today unless decisive action is taken now. His words resonated deeply, setting a motivational tone for the entire event.

Expert Sessions and Activities

Speech on Tree Care and Environmental Responsibility

Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator of Biotech Hub from the Department of Botany, delivered an enlightening address on the importance of post-plantation care. He highlighted that true environmental stewardship extends beyond merely planting trees—it involves nurturing and protecting them. Dr. Sonowal encouraged students to develop a genuine love for nature and to become advocates against deforestation. His practical advice on tree care and his call to inspire others to protect green cover were particularly well-received.

Leadership in Organization and Campus Activities

Mr. Sajidur Rahman, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, played a pivotal role in the seamless organization of the event. Under his guidance, students engaged in tree plantation drives and campus cleaning activities, fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork. His leadership ensured that the event was not only educational but also action-oriented.

Contribution of NSS Unit

Mr. Krishna Kalita, Assistant Professor and Program Officer of the NSS Unit, was instrumental in coordinating the various segments of the programme. His efforts ensured enthusiastic participation and smooth execution of all planned activities, further strengthening the impact of the event.
