Observation of International Day of Biodiversity f

Department of Botany and Zoology, NSS Unit in collaboration with IBT, IIC and UNESCO - NER organise International Day of Biodiversity on 22-05-2026 at Digital Classroom from 01.00 pm onwards. A total of 92 students were participated in the program.

Theme: Acting locally for global impact.

Organized by: Department of Botany and Zoology, NSS unit in collaboration with IBT-Hub and IIC, Namrup College, UNESCO – RC, NER, India.

Venue: Smart classroom, Namrup College

Objectives of the program:

To create awareness about the importance of biological diversity.

To acquaint the students, the need to conserve nature for sustainable future.

To spread awareness and encourage positive action towards environmental conservation.

To apprise the audience about Parthenium hysterophorus: an invasive threat to biodiversity and human health.

Program details:

The awareness program commenced at around 1 pm in the smart classroom. Followed by seating of the dignitaries, the principal of Namrup college addressed the gathering and delivered the welcome speech which motivated the students to understand the importance of protecting biodiversity and preserving nature.

Special lecture and quiz by keynote speaker:

Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, IQAC coordinator and HOD, department of Botany delivered a special lecture on the topic, “Parthenium hysterophorus: An Invasive Threat to Biodiversity and Human Health” aimed to create awareness on biodiversity and conservation. He explained the antibiosis of this invasive species and its adverse effect on human health and local biodiversity. Emphasizing on this year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact”, he motivated the students for their active participation in eradication of the said invasive weed from nearby localities of Namrup college. This noble initiative of annihilation was pioneered last year on this same day and also during Seva-hi-Samarpan: Seva Saptah (17-23 September, 2025). A small quiz was also conducted in between lectures to retain the attention of the students throughout the entire session. 

Outcome of the program:

The awareness program successfully fulfilled all the objectives mentioned above. The special lecture and quiz helped the students to understand the detrimental foray of Parthenium hysterophorus and its hostile effects on biodiversity. It also encouraged them to create awareness about this invasive weed among local masses and involve in community participation of eradicati

on of the same.

Publication of Edited Book “BioNexus”

The Department of Botany, Namrup College successfully published an edited book titled “BioNexus” on 28th March 2026 during an IQAC meeting of the college.

The book comprises 11 selected chapters, contributed by a total of 27 authors, including academicians and researchers from diverse fields of life sciences. The publication reflects a collaborative academic effort aimed at promoting scientific research, knowledge dissemination, and interdisciplinary learning.

The book has been jointly edited by Dr. Urmika Phangchopi, Ms. Kakoli Baruah, and Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, who meticulously compiled and reviewed the contributions to ensure academic quality and relevance.

The formal release of the book was carried out by Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, Principal of Namrup College. In his address, he congratulated the Department of Botany for their commendable initiative in publishing the book. He highlighted that “BioNexus” would serve as a valuable resource for students, research scholars, and the teaching fraternity, and would contribute significantly to academic enrichment.

On behalf of the editorial team, Dr. Jayanta Sonowal delivered a brief speech outlining the background and journey of the book from conception to publication. He shared insights into the motivation behind the project, the collaborative efforts involved, and the challenges faced during the editorial process.

The publication of “BioNexus” marks an important academic milestone for the Department of Botany, reflecting its commitment to fostering research culture and scholarly excellence.
