In a significant step towards environmental conservation and community engagement, Namrup College observed World Environment Day 2026 through a series of awareness programmes and outreach activities organized both on the college campus and in neighbouring educational institutions. The programmes were conducted under the collaborative initiative of the Department of Botany, Department of Zoology, NSS Unit, and Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) of Namrup College.
As part of its extension activities, the college has been continuously working to develop an environmentally conscious society by transferring scientific knowledge and research findings to grassroots communities. This year, the World Environment Day programmes were organized at Kawaimari High School and Namrup Public High School on 5 June 2026.
In line with the global theme of World Environment Day 2026, “Inspired by Nature: For Climate. For Our Future,” the college emphasized the urgent need to restore local biodiversity through the management and eradication of the invasive weed Parthenium hysterophorus. Recognizing the ecological and health hazards posed by the species, Namrup College has been implementing a systematic action plan since 2025 to control and eradicate Parthenium from Namrup and its adjoining areas.
Addressing the students, teachers and local residents, Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Assistant Professor of Botany, highlighted the adverse impacts of Parthenium on agriculture, biodiversity, livestock and human health. Mr. Sajidur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Zoology, and Dr. Susmita Thakur, Assistant Professor of Zoology, elaborated on the importance of biodiversity conservation and community participation in combating invasive species. The resource persons also demonstrated the safe physical removal of Parthenium, emphasizing the use of protective measures while handling the weed and encouraging early-stage eradication to prevent its spread.
The programmes witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and teachers of both schools, who actively engaged in discussions and practical demonstrations. The awareness campaign aimed to empower the younger generation with scientific knowledge and practical skills necessary for protecting their local environment.
Earlier in the day, at 9:00 a.m., Namrup College organized a special awareness programme during the morning assembly on the college campus. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dipti Dutta Saikia sensitized students about contemporary environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and sustainable lifestyle practices. She urged students to become responsible environmental ambassadors and contribute actively towards building a greener future.
Concluding the day's programmes, Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, Principal of Namrup College, delivered the concluding remarks and appreciated the efforts of the Departments of Botany and Zoology, NSS Unit and IIC for organizing meaningful outreach activities beyond the college campus. He emphasized that environmental conservation cannot be achieved through isolated efforts and requires active participation from educational institutions, local communities and young citizens. He further stated that awareness, scientific knowledge and collective action are essential for safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for coming generations.
Through such research-based extension activities and community-oriented programmes, Namrup College continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The institution reaffirmed its resolve to work closely with local communities in addressing environmental challenges and fostering ecological awareness across the region.
