Morning Assembly

The Botany Department of Namrup College successfully organized and conducted the morning assembly activities today, engaging students and faculty in a meaningful and enlightening session.

The programme commenced with a solemn prayer, which was joined by all present within the college campus, setting a harmonious tone for the day. The assembly was officially hoisted by Mr. Nayan Jyoti Gogoi, a dedicated fifth-semester student of the Botany Department, who welcomed everyone and introduced the sequence of events.

Adding depth to the morning gathering, Mr. Rupjyoti Gogoi, a student of HS 2nd Year Science, delivered the “Thought for the Day,” inspiring the audience with his reflective and motivational message.

The highlight of the assembly was a compelling speech by Mr. Ashok Urgang, a third-semester Botany major, who spoke on the significant topic, “Palm Oil Cultivation and Its Consequences on Biodiversity and Local Crops.” Mr. Urgang thoughtfully addressed the environmental and agricultural impacts of palm oil farming, raising awareness about ecological balance and sustainable practices.

Concluding the programme, the Principal of Namrup College, Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, delivered a concise and insightful summary speech, appreciating the efforts of the Botany students and emphasizing the importance of such educational activities in fostering environmental consciousness among young learners.

World Environment Day 2025

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the Department of Botany and Zoology, in collaboration with the Institutional Biotech Hub, NSS Unit, and IQAC of Namrup College, organized a comprehensive and impactful programme aimed at fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students and faculty. The event was meticulously planned, featuring insightful speeches, hands-on activities, and a collective commitment to the cause of nature conservation.

Opening Ceremony and Keynote Address

The programme commenced with an inspiring opening speech by Mr. Hijam Homendro Singh, Retired Associate Professor of Namrup College. Mr. Singh passionately emphasized the critical role of youth in the mission of nature conservation. He urged the younger generation to actively participate in safeguarding the environment, reminding everyone that the future will not mirror the comforts of today unless decisive action is taken now. World No Tobacco Day Observed at Namrup College

The Department of Botany at Namrup College demonstrated commendable leadership by organizing World No Tobacco Day on 31st May 2025. The primary aim of the program was to raise awareness about the severe health hazards caused by tobacco consumption.

The event commenced in the morning at the college assembly ground, graced by the presence of Dr. Durga Prasad Gogoi, Principal of Namrup College, along with teaching and non-teaching staff and students. Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Botany, delivered an impactful lecture emphasizing the critical dangers tobacco poses to human health.

During his address, Dr. Sonowal highlighted the key fatal consequences of tobacco use, drawing attention to its role in causing life-threatening diseases and affecting the well-being of individuals and society as a whole. International Day for Biodiversity 2025- Report

Namrup College marked the International Day for Biodiversity on 22nd May 2025 with the theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development." The event was a collaborative effort by the Department of Botany and Zoology, NSS Unit, Institutional Biotech Hub, and IQAC of Namrup College. The primary objective was to raise awareness about the urgent need for conservation of indigenous species and local biodiversity, emphasizing the power of community participation in achieving these goals.

Focus on Invasive Species: Parthenium hysterophorous

The programme centered on the alarming spread of the invasive alien plant species Parthenium hysterophorous in Namrup and its surrounding areas over the past 2-3 years. Recognized globally as one of the most threatening weeds to local biodiversity, Parthenium poses severe risks not only to native flora and fauna but also to human and animal health. Its rapid proliferation has become a pressing concern for the region.

Orientation Class for HS II students

Classes for the new academic session 2025-26 commenced on 23rd April 2025 with great enthusiasm and promise. On the very first day, the Botany Department organized an insightful orientation cum awareness session in the forenoon to warmly welcome the students and set a strong foundation for the journey ahead.

Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Head of the Botany Department, addressed the students with inspiring words, urging them to thoroughly understand the subject details and prepare diligently to complete the academic curriculum by September 2025. He emphasized the importance of utilizing time wisely, focusing on relevant topics, and embracing every aspect of the syllabus to achieve their academic and career goals. Dr. Sonowal also highlighted that the Higher Secondary (HS) course is a crucial phase that shapes a student's future direction and success.

Adding to this motivational start, Ms. Kakoli Baruah, Assistant Professor of Botany, elaborated on the syllabus contents and shared valuable study tips to help students grasp the core concepts of each chapter effectively. Dr. Urmika Phangchopi, Assistant Professor, encouraged all students to maintain regular attendance and actively participate in classes to maximize their learning experience.

Science awareness programme at Beehive Axom Public School

On April 2, 2025, Beehive Axom Public School celebrated its Silver Jubilee. To commemorate this occasion, students from the Botany Department organized an exhibition showcasing basic scientific tools for the school students. The primary goal of this event was to foster interest in science education among the students. During the exhibition, our students, Mr. Nayanjyoti Gogoi and Mr. Ashok Urang, demonstrated the operational technique and application of these instruments. They were accompanied by Dr. Jayanta Sonowal, Head of the Botany Department. The event provided an engaging platform for interaction with numerous school students.
